Mathematics Department |
The Mathematics Department of Loch Raven High School offers fourteen different courses geared toward the abilities of our students. The standard program fulfills the state graduation requirement while honors and gifted/talented programs challenge the highly able.
Courses in geometry utilize technology through the use of Geometer's Sketchpad and Cabri Geometry on the TI-84. Analysis courses include instruction on the use of graphing calculators. Algebra courses address the high school assessment program. Preparation for the math portions of the PSAT and SAT is infused in many courses.
Advanced Placement courses in calculus and statistics allow students the opportunity to earn college credit.
The staff, chaired by Mr. Kenneth Witts, features an average of thirteen years of experience. Staffers have come to Loch Raven with experiences in other county high schools such as Milford Mill, Kenwood, Owings Mills, Parkville, Notre Dame Prep, Loyola, and Chesapeake. Members of the Mathematics Department oversee the National Honor Society, coach soccer, lacrosse, softball, and sponsor Forensics, SGA, Bible Club, Freshman Class and Mu Alpha Theta, the National Math Honor Society.
The department also encourages participation in the Maryland Math League. Students involved in this group compete monthly against students from other high schools through a series of difficult examinations. Loch Raven students won the competition in 1994, 1997, and 1998.
